Description: Social justice has gained momentum in the field of education and many believe that promoting practices that demonstrate a social justice framework are essential to inequalities in education.  Learning how to get comfortable with being uncomfortable is essential to being a leader in the field of social justice. Participants will develop an understanding of current research in the field of social justice within education as well as learn new skills to allow them to be agents of social justice within their educational practice.    The afternoon session will be spent engaged in social justice activities to be added to your toolbox to bring back to use in your schools. 

David Shriberg, PhD., is a Professor of Education at Loyola University Chicago. He received his doctorate in school/counseling psychology from Northeastern University and prior to entering academia he worked as a school psychologist in metro Boston. Dr. Shriberg has presented widely on topics related to social justice, cultural diversity, and education. He is the Editor of Journal of Educational and Psychological Consultation and a co-editor of the book School Psychology and Social Justice: Conceptual Foundations and Tools for Practice.

Objectives:  

  • Understand current research in the field of social justice
  • Participants will develop tools to allow them to be agents of social justice within their educational practice
  • Participants will explore social justice issues pertinent to their practice through engagement in activities and exercises that can be brought back to your schools and districts.

                        1:00 to 4:00     Afternoon Session (Break mid-afternoon)
